There is no single charge that fits every clogged drain. A local blockage under a sink may call for a different visit and method than a recurring problem affecting several fixtures, a toilet obstruction or a suspected issue farther along the line. Before booking, find out how the plumber separates the call-out, diagnosis and actual clearing work.

What shapes the quote
The location of the blockage is a major factor. A slow kitchen sink may involve its trap or a nearby section of pipe, while poor drainage at several fixtures can point to a problem farther along the system. A phone description helps the plumber prepare, but it may not establish the cause or the full scope before an inspection.
Access and the condition of the plumbing also matter. Reaching an exposed trap is not the same job as accessing a concealed pipe or investigating a recurring obstruction. Ask whether the initial assessment is included and whether the quote could change if the blockage is somewhere other than expected.
Sink, shower and toilet blockages
For a local clog, a plumber may inspect the drain opening and trap before choosing a suitable clearing method. Hair and residue can collect in a shower or bath drain; kitchen sinks can be affected by grease and food scraps. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis: the pipe layout and the actual location of the blockage determine the work.
A toilet clog can require different tools and access, so explain whether water is draining slowly, rising or backing up. Avoid pushing a hard object farther into the pipe, and do not mix household drain chemicals. Either can make the situation harder to handle or create a hazard when a fitting is opened. If the bowl is close to overflowing, stop using it and tell the plumber.
Camera inspections, urgent calls and Shabbat
A camera inspection is not automatically needed for every clog. A plumber may suggest one when a blockage keeps returning, routine clearing has not resolved the problem, or the location and condition of a pipe need checking. Ask whether the inspection is included in the quote, charged as a separate service, and what information the plumber will provide afterward.
The timing of a call can also affect how a service is quoted. Some plumbers distinguish a planned visit from an urgent call or work outside ordinary hours, including Shabbat; policies vary by provider. Before confirming, ask about the call-out, urgency, diagnosis and clearing work as separate items, and give the plumber your area and the nature of the problem.
How to compare quotes before work begins
Give a clear account of which fixture is affected, whether more than one drain is slow, when the issue began and whether it has happened before. If neighbours report similar symptoms or you suspect a shared building line, mention that at the outset. It may change what needs to be investigated and who should coordinate access.
Ask what counts as the completed job, such as checking that water drains after the clearing, and whether equipment or dismantling could be additional. If the plumber finds a different fault, request an explanation and revised scope before authorising extra work.
